Ex I. Analyse the sentences and substitute the definite article for an appropriate Ukrainian demonstrative pronoun. Tr the sentences into Ukrainian.

1.     This was the man Dorian Gray was waiting for. (O. Wilde) - це був той чоловік, на якого чекав ДГ.

2.      He had met the woman at last - the woman he had thought little about, not being given to thinking about women. (Ibid.) – в решті решт, він зустрівся з тою жінкою – з тою самою жінкою, про котру думав рідко, не маючи схильності думати про жінок.

3.     Eight Street Bridge is the place. (J.London) -

4.     - and at the instant he knew, he ceased to know. (Ibid.) – і в той самий момент

5.     That's the Barney, that has the ugly daughter. (W. Maken) – це той самий Барні, що має страшненьку доньку.

Ex II. Substitute the definite article for an appropriate possessive pronoun. Translate the sentences into Ukrainian.

1.     He had uttered a mad wish that he himself might remain young, and the portrait grow old - . (O. Wide) – він висловив це/своє божевільне бажання, щоб він сам залишався молодим навіки, а його портрет старішав замість нього.

2.      It was his beauty that ruined him, his beauty and the youth that he had prayed for. (Ibid.) – його краса й зруйнувала його, його краса й та молодість, за яку він так молився.

3.     «Take the thing off the face. I wish to see it.» (Ibid.) – прибери цю річ зі свого обличчя, я хочу побачити його.

4.     1 know the age better than you do, though you will prate about it so tediously. (Ibid.) – я знаю цей час краще за тебе, хоча ти й старанно базікатимеш про це.

5.     The next night, of course, I arrived at the place again. (Ibid.) – наступної ночі я , звичайно, прийшов туди знову. 

Ex III. Translate the sentences into Ukrainian. Give your reasons for the choice of the indefinite pronoun (or cardinal numeral) to express the lexical meaning of articles.

1. «A Mr. Forsyte to see you, sir». (J. Galsworthy) – до вас якийсь Mr. Forsyte, сер.

2. «By the way, have you any spare clothes you could give the wife of a poor snipe? -. (Ibid.) – до речі, чи є в тебе якийсь зайвий одяг, що ти можеш віддати дружині одного/цього бідняка?

 9. «We're going to kill a Swede. Do you know a big Swede named Ole Anderson?» (Ibid.) – ми збираємося вбити одного шведа. Чи знаєш ти того великого шведа на ім'я Ол Андерсон?

13. «What a fool Rawdon Grawley has been to go and marry a governess!» (W. Thackeray) – що за дурнем був Rawdon Grawley, щоб поїхати та одружитися з якоюсь гувернанткою!

14. After a pause Lord Henry pulled out his watch. (O. Wilde) -

Exercise IV. Analyse the sentences below. Identify how the contextual meanings of the bold type articles are realized in Ukrainian (as an identifying pronoun, a relative adjective or any other semantically/contextually suitable word). Translate the sentences into Ukr.

1.       Desperately he came to a halt in front of one decent picture hanging on the walls. (A. Huxley) – отчаянно он остановился напротив одной из  неплохих картин, висящих на стенах

6. «What's that?» he replied to a question from Olney that broke in upon his train of thought. (Ibid.) «що це?» - відповів він на те запитання Олні, що ввірвалося в його хід думок.

 7. «Yes, she is a peacock in everything but beauty», said Lord Henry. (O. Wilde) – так, вона чванлива в усьому, окрім краси

9. They are always telling that it (America) is the Paradise for women. (Ibid.) – вони завжди кажуть що це – справжній рай для жінок

17. «You can tell me the truth without giving me any of that lip.»(W. Saroyan)

Exercise V. Substitute the articles in bold type for the appropriate particles (вже, навіть, просто, саме, таки, ще, etc.). Translate the sentences into Ukrainian.

4. It seems to be the one thing that can make modern life mysterious or marvellous to us. (Ibid.) – здається, це саме та річ, що може зробити сучасне життя загадковим чи дивовижним для нас.

8. The very thought of it stirs me. (J. London) – сама тільки думка про це хвилює мене

10.   «I suppose, it's the thing to do», Macomber agreed. (Ibid.) – я вважаю, це саме те, що треба зробити

13. - He says he wouldn't sit down at the table with one (Negro) for a million dollars. (Ibid.) – він каже, що не сидів би за одним столом з негром навіть за мільйон доларів.

18. What a girl! (T.Dreiser) – яка чудова дівчина!

Exercise I. Define the structural form of the components in the two-componental asyndetic substantival clusters below. Suggest the possible ways of conveying their meaning into Ukrainian.

Exercise III. Analyse the three-componental asyndetic sub­stantival clusters below. Point out the closer NN-type sense units in them and the starting components for their translation into Ukrainian.

Exercise IV. Point out the sense units in the three-componental asyndetic substantival clusters below and render descriptively their meanings into Ukrainian.
